For the registration plate, the vehicle must have lights with ECE approval in accordance with §10 Para. 6 FZV.

What has to be considered for the number plate illumination?

Number plate lighting is used to identify the number plate in the dark, so the light source may only be colourless (white) so as not to distort the number plate. Only lamps with a valid ECE approval may be fitted; this can be recognised by a circled ? on the housing. This international test mark confirms that these lights may be operated in road traffic. Driving with lights without ECE approval is an administrative offence and can lead to the invalidation of the operating licence.

Is LED number plate lighting possible?

LED licence plate lighting is generally possible if it has ECE approval. We always recommend having them installed by a specialist workshop and, in the event of legal questions, contacting the responsible authority in the respective country. LED number plate lighting is characterised by its durability, robustness and higher light output and is therefore very popular.
