Marker lights - legally required for many vehicles

The use of marker lights is regulated in § 51 of the STVZO. According to this paragraph, passenger cars, motorbikes with sidecars, trucks and trailers must have marker lights, which makes them urgently needed lights.

What exactly are marker lights supposed to indicate?

The purpose of marker lights is to indicate the actual width of the vehicle even in the dark, thus helping other road users to better assess it. The lights shine in one colour only and are to be mounted on the front (white) or rear (red) of the vehicle, depending on the colour of the light. Estimating the actual width is particularly important in order to be able to correctly assess oncoming traffic and thus prevent head-on collisions in the dark. But also when overtaking, it is important to clearly see the actual width of the vehicle you want to overtake.

Different models for different requirements and styles

Whether white marker lights for mounting on the front of the vehicle or red ones for the rear, we carry a wide selection of these lights in our range. The majority of them are modern LED lights, but you will also find marker lights with bulbs in our selection. These lights often have the advantage that a reflector of the same colour is also installed as an element.

The advantage of LED marker lights is clearly their durability and lower susceptibility to faults. Visually, many prefer LED lights because the arrangement of the individual light points in the light can create different visual effects, which can be more striking or more discreet, depending on personal style.

We also have the option here of a transparent light disk in combination with red or white LEDs, so the luminaires are maximally inconspicuous during the day, but at night they achieve the required effect. Important tips on the correct installation of vehicle lighting.

It is important to find out beforehand how many lights may be fitted at all. There are clear legal regulations on this. When installing vehicle lighting, we always advise you to consult a specialist workshop. This is the only way to guarantee that everything can be operated correctly and without problems later on. The workshop also usually knows how many additional lights are possible and where the ideal place is to mount them. In the case of vehicle lighting, care should also be taken to ensure that the necessary E-approval mark is available for the light. This mark confirms that the light has been tested and approved in accordance with the regulations of the UN Economic for Europe (ECE) organisation. If this mark is missing, this can lead to the invalidation of the operating permit and must therefore be avoided at all costs.

Also, if lighting without an E-approval mark is found at the TÜV, a significant defect is detected. Since most of our lights can be used with an operating voltage of 12V-24V, they are very versatile. The exact details can always be found in the individual description of each luminaire.
