Side marker lights, mandatory for long vehicles

Section 51a of the STVO regulates the side marking of a vehicle or trailer. It prescribes the installation of lights on the long side of the vehicle from a length of more than 6 metres. These lights must be yellow-orange. If the vehicle is longer, an additional side marker light is required for every three metres.

What are side marker lights needed for?

This type of vehicle lighting provides information about the length of a vehicle. Especially with particularly long vehicles, it is important to be able to assess them correctly even in the dark and thus to be able to weigh up the decision to overtake correctly. When turning left, it can also be important to be able to correctly assess the complete length of a vehicle of oncoming traffic in the dark.

Different sizes and types leave plenty of scope for style

There is nothing we can do about the colour of the side marker lights. This is prescribed by law and so all our side marker lights shine in yellow or orange-yellow. On the other hand, there is a wide choice of shapes and sizes in our range. There are square, oval, round or extra flat lights. So there is something for every taste and every style. And since we mainly use modern LED lights here, there is also the option of using a transparent lens if the orange on the vehicle bothers you. In this way, the luminaires blend into the background in bright light, but in operation they shine in the correct colour as prescribed. LED lights make up the bulk of our range and offer the advantage of being durable and robust. Especially the flat slim luminaires are very popular. However, side marker lights with incandescent lamps are of course also still in our range.

The installation of the lights should be carried out professionally.

We recommend that vehicle lights should only be fitted to the vehicle by a specialist workshop. This way you can be sure that everything has been connected correctly, that legal requirements have been met and that no other faults occur.

It is also important to know that only lights with an E-approval mark may be installed. This confirms that the light has been tested and approved in accordance with ECE regulations. In an emergency, a missing E-mark can lead to the invalidation of the operating licence or, at the TÜV, to a finding of a significant defect. However, even with an E-approval mark, legal requirements regarding installation must be observed.
