End-outline marker lights - mandatory for many vehicles, a must for trucks.

Must Whether clearance lights are mandatory on a vehicle is regulated by § 51b of the STVZO. According to this, all vehicles with a width of more than 2.10 metres must be equipped with clearance lights. This definitely includes trucks, articulated lorries and heavy goods vehicles, so these lights are an important lighting element in this area.

Why is an end-outline marker light needed on wide vehicles?

End-outline marker lamps are fitted to the side of the vehicle and are specifically designed to indicate the entire width and possibly also the particular outline of a vehicle. They are not a replacement for, but a supplement to, the tail lights and marker lights. Visibility of the full width in the dark is extremely important so that oncoming traffic can accurately judge the width and thus avoid head-on collisions. When overtaking at night, it is also necessary to be able to correctly assess the width of the vehicle being overtaken.

End-outline marker lamps differ in design from marker lamps

Whereas marker lights always shine in one colour and in one direction, an end-outline marker light shines white to the front and red to the rear. It is therefore also mounted on the side of the vehicle in such a way that this is guaranteed. End-outline marker lights usually consist of a rubber arm or a special bracket and are either already equipped with light sources or, as with the lights from the Gylle company, extra light modules can be fitted in the arms. There are also clearance lights with an additional, integrated side marker light. This then emits light from the side, naturally in the fluorescent colour yellow-orange.

Most of the clearance lights in our range are equipped with modern LEDs. These are particularly durable and less susceptible to faults. However, the Gylle company in particular also offers the option of combining these luminaires with a bulb holder and matching lens.

With clearance lights, it is like with all vehicle lighting in our range, there are simple lights that do what they are supposed to do and those that add extra style to the truck. So there are not only the classic, small rubber arms, but also larger or even angular arms that look particularly modern. There are also lights with milky lenses that create a neon effect.

Important information on the correct installation of vehicle lighting in general

As a matter of principle, we always recommend that vehicle lighting be installed or fitted by a specialist workshop. This is the only way to guarantee that everything is fitted correctly and runs smoothly.

It is also important to know that lights must have a so-called E-approval mark.

This mark indicates that the light has been tested according to ECE regulations and approved for use on the vehicle. If this mark is missing on vehicle lights, the TÜV may find a significant defect. When found on the road, the absence of this test mark on the lights can lead to the invalidation of the operating permit. Therefore, if you do not want any problems caused by your lighting, make sure that you only use lights with this mark and also that you only attach them within the scope of the legal requirements (quantity, place of attachment).
